It is very important that the installation of fire doors is fitted by a competent person who has been trained in installing and maintaining fire doors, this ensures that the fire door is going to be fit for purpose.

The way to check if you have a fire door if at the top or bottom of a fire door you should find a sticker, this sticker will contain the certification of that fire door. You can also tell by the thickness of a door, an FD30 fire door has a thickness of 44mm and an FD60 fire door has a thickness of 54mm.

During a fire door survey our certified inspector/installer would check for the below on all fire doors you require surveying:

  • Does the fire door shut fully into its rebate?
  • Does the door have any certification label on the door?
  • Is the gap between the door leaf and door frame less then 4mm?
  • Is the door leaf and door frame free from damage and in good condition?
  • Do the hinges look in good working order and have the CE mark
  • Are the intumescent heat and smoke seals in good condition or even installed?
  • Are the handles/locks or other ironmongery working correctly and fire rated?
  • Does the door have the correct signage to indicate it is a fire door? Ie keep shut sign
  • Does the door have a self closing device if so is it working correctly? Does the device have any leaking oil and free from damage?

Fire doors should be inspected regular just as you would a fire alarm. A repair would be carried out if the current fire door is certified and undamaged but may need bringing back in line with the current regulations ie the gaps are over 4mm, heat and smoke seals aren’t there or ironmongery fitted aren’t fire rated.

A new installation would be required if the door or frame have been deemed unfit for purpose and don’t comply to current regulations. A new installation would provide you with a new certified fire door and frame with all relevant fire rated ironmongery and will come certified and installed by our certified fitters.

A nominal fire door is often an old fire door that does not have any type of certification, the way it is deemed a nominal door is the door has the characteristics of a fire door ie heat & smoke seals, thickness of the door, closing device is fitted to it. This is what we would deem as a nominal door which we could do remedial works on and bring it in line with current regulations.

An FD30 is a fire door that is fire resistant up to 30 minutes. An FD60 is a fire door that is fire resistant up to 6 months. FD60 fire door is what we recommend in areas like Kitchens and stairwells as there is more fire resistance for escape.

An FD30S fire door is not only fire resistant but is also smoke resistant for up to 30 minutes. You can also get FD60S which are fire and smoke resistant for up to 60 minutes.

Certification is becoming highly important for fire doors, this is because it provides evidence that the door Is fire and smoke resistant, it also provides proof that the doors are certified and installed by a competent person that has knowledge on fire door installation working within the current UK regulations.

If it is deemed you require a new fire door installation, you would have a new fire door frame, a new certified fire door leaf, all fire rated ironmongery you require ie handle, kick plates, locks and self-closing device if needed, any fire rated signage. This installation would be installed by our certified fire door installer, and you would also receive the required fire certification for the door and data sheets for the fire rated ironmongery.

Once a fire door is installed by us we supply you with the following:
